How GNSS Surveying Works on Construction Sites

GNSS surveying uses satellite signals to determine position on the Earth’s surface. On construction and infrastructure projects, it provides rapid positioning for control points, boundaries and large‑area topographical surveys. However, it must be used carefully and often in combination with total stations to meet design tolerances.

What to Look For

• Your project covers a large or linear site such as a road, pipeline or housing estate
• You need coordinates on OS grid or other national systems
• Traditional traverses would be slow or difficult to tie into a wider network
• You are working in relatively open areas with clear sky visibility
• Designers, utilities and authorities expect a georeferenced survey
• You have previously received survey data in OS grid / OSTN coordinates

How We Diagnose the Problem

GNSS receivers track signals from multiple satellite constellations and use correction services to improve accuracy. On many projects they are used to establish primary control, which is then densified and checked with total stations. Urban canyons, tree cover and reflective surfaces can degrade GNSS performance.

Control networks are established and verified with both GNSS and total stations, and final drawings clearly state the coordinate system, vertical datum and accuracy achieved so design teams can rely on the data.
